Being a Strong Leader

A leader is someone that others look to for guidance and direction. For a business, it’s usually the CEO. For a solo entrepreneur, it’s him or herself!  As a leader, the most important thing you can do is to stay on top of the competition—know who your competitors are, what they are doing and how much they’re charging for it.Leadership2

According to Steve Tobak, a management coach and managing partner at Invisor Consulting, the following are several other things that leaders should be doing in order to be successful.

Engaging key stakeholders

Key stakeholders for a leader/CEO include customers, employees and investors. Perhaps your stakeholders are a bit different, but no matter who they are, it’s important to regularly engage everyone. You can do this by sharing updates about the company and products or asking for feedback (and really listening to what your stakeholders are saying). It’s also great to motivate your stakeholders and keep the positive energy going.

Learn from experience

Similar to the reasons why students take internships in college, experience is the best way to learn. If you’re new to being a leader or entrepreneur, find a mentor who can help you to navigate your course. Ask questions and learn what worked for him/her (and what didn’t).

As you gain experience on-the-job, you’ll be able to more effectively judge a situation and handle it in the best way possible.

Negotiate effectively

Negotiation is a key element in business—leaders need to enjoy negotiation and learn how to do it effectively. Reaching agreements and decisions is crucial to any leader, and the ability to be smart about what you’re asking for (and how you ask for it) is a necessary skill of all strong leaders.

Other strong qualities that leaders should exhibit include prioritizing and delegating, acting on smart decisions, troubleshooting tough problems, and more.

As a leader, what qualities do you feel are most important? What are some of the best qualities and traits of your favorite leaders and managers?
